If you read our last post, then I am sure you must have seen the trailer for the upcoming movie ‘Pokemon Detective Pikachu‘.
Although the Pokemon movie trailer manages to bring back our childhood memories, especially Pikachu (the cutest of all) along with a good dose of nostalgia, I personally had a lukewarm reaction to it. Why you ask? Let me tell you with a few reasons.
First up is the story itself, if you have seen the original series which I am sure you have, the story-line had its own set of twists and turns which made the show very appealing to young children.
The trailer however gave me a typical children’s Hollywood film vibe. I am sure that the story will include a protagonist meeting Pikachu, then they head off to fight this bad guy and will eventually catch them. Basically, it doesn’t bring anything new to the table unlike the original anime series.
Secondly, Pikachu as a character has always been portrayed as this cute, little munchkin who was always loyal to Ash. Hearing Pikachu with this deep, manly voice in the trailer just gave me weird vibes.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Ryan Reynolds with all my fangirl spirit, however, his voice just doesn’t go very well with Pikachu.
Lastly, I wish the plot would have a bit more creative. In the trailer one can see Pikachu only being able to communicate with the main lead, however, no one else understands what he speaks. This plot isn’t really very original but surely kids would love it.
Overall, the trailer shows everything that a good Hollywood movie needs like great cast, great special effects combined with a okay-ish story. However, for a millennial like me who grew up watching the original series, this trailer didn’t sit very well with me. And of course the plot is set in the future where America is portrayed as this highly developed nation where all the real action happens right? It can’t be set in another place like Japan AT ALL guys!
Pokemon, especially Pikachu and Ash’s relationship taught me a lot as a child, but seeing the series you love being trivialized into a formulaic Hollywood movie just leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
It’d be nice if movie-makers and script writers create something more original than re-make old shows. Yes, I am looking pointedly at you Netflix! However, this is just my opinion, let me know your opinion in the comment section below without creating a ruckus about anything, for the world is beautiful guys, let’s keep it that way.
