Born into a Maharashtrian Brahmins family on 19 November 1828 in Varanasi, Manikarnika was one of the important figures of India’s independence movement. She took the name of Lakshmi Bai after tying the knot with Jhansi king Raja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar. Rani Lakshmibai was a symbol of bravery, honour and patriotism and turned out to be a leading figure of Indian Independence for her significant contribution to the Rebellion of 1857. On the unfortunate day of 18 June 1858, Manikarnika martyred her life for India’s freedom.
