There’s a reason why Hollywood loves to make movies about independent women (‘Joy’, ‘Eat, Pray Love’, ‘Legally Blonde’, ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’, ‘Wild’—this list could go on and on): they’re relatable, moving, inspiring, and full of all the things we fantasize about doing on our own. Most of the times, we forget to take a step back and give ourselves some quality “me” time and do things for ourself. Many of us put our happiness and dreams on hold for another day, when the truth is life is happening right now. If you want to make positive changes, today is the day. Once you give yourself some time, you’ll learn to truly love yourself and become independent. Also, let’s face it – some things are just more fun alone. *Wink, wink*. I’m not going to suggest that you kick it ancient-monk style and take up some rare practice of Zen meditation as you greet the sunrise or some other Eat Pray Love cliche.
Paulo Coelho wrote: One day you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted to do. Do it now. Listed below are things you should do for yourself, by yourself:
1. Travel solo to a new place.
Take a cue from Eat, Pray, Love and plan a solo trip. It doesn’t matter how far you go or what you do while you’re there, as long as you challenge yourself a bit, create some memories, and have a blast while doing it.
2. Cook something you’ve never had before.
Cook a new dish you’ve been eyeing up; you don’t have guests to let down if it goes wrong, and if it goes right you can eat it all yourself.
Exercise can be a little awkward, especially when you first start. Exercising alone means you get to move at your own pace, and do exercises that interest you personally.
4. Go out to eat.
Bring along a book that you can’t put down, and immerse yourself in good eats and good reads — really, what’s better than that?
5. Sing karaoke.
Be bold, grab that mike, go out to that new place you’ve never been before and sing your heart out. No one’s gonna judge you and even if they then so what?
6. Mix up your routine.
Don’t live the same routine million times and call it a life rather try a new route, coffee shop, walking trail, hobby, activity, city or career.
7. Decorate your room with fairy lights
Fairy lights are an instant moos-filter. It adds a certain magic to your room which you probably comply with. As I say, nothing can go wrong with fairy lights.
8. Take a Shopping Trip Alone
Solo shopping is the best! There is such freedom in shopping alone. You don’t have to sit through your friend trying on every sweater from that store you actually kind of hate
This is the most peaceful thing I’ve ever done. Lay on your back and marvel at your complete and utter smallness in comparison to the rest of the universe.
10. Thank and Appreciate Yourself
Lastly, never forget to thank yourself for all that you have done for yourself as well as acknowledge your progress. Gratitude for yourself is one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself. So give it to yourself every day.
