Most of us are raised to believe that our mama knows the best and knows it all. Those of us who are lucky enough to share fun relationships with our mommies are also well aware that half of the things she told us while growing up were completely false and hilarious. But then again can’t blame her, we were so inquisitive and asked billions of questions so they shut us down with those white lies and we totally believed them. Most of the time the white lies and half truths are just a means to get us to do what is best for us and sometimes they’re myths and tales that have just been passed down through the generations.
Below are certain white lies that mama told us while growing up:
1. Hair Colour myth: Don’t colour your hair, it’ll make them rough.
If we don’t care enough after colouring it, it’ll become dry and rough but then this also goes for uncoloured hair as well.
2. Tooth-fairy lie.
As a kid I put a tooth in a plastic bag and slid it under my pillow for the tooth fairy. When my parents forgot to put money under my pillow, my mom said, ‘You shouldn’t have put the tooth in a bag. The tooth fairy couldn’t smell it.’ She bluffed that part so well, makes me laugh.
3. Battery Lie.
Whenever the battery died out for my favourite toy, mom would say, “They don’t sell replacement batteries for that toy.”
4. Inside out.
When I was little my mum told me that if I burped, farted, and sneezed at the same time, I would turn inside out. Such a hilarious lie.
5. Looking inside the microwave while it’s running (will spoil your food).
The later part varied upon our mom’s, but the baseline used to be not to look inside the microwave! When I was naive, I did buy what she said.
6. Don’t use deodorant it darkens your underarms.
There might be a possibility that some people’s skin reacts to the ingredients of a deodorant spray, this is not an all encompassing rule.
7. Don’t wear lipstick, your lips will become dark.
There are many reasons that cause lips to darken from smoking to sun exposure. But lip products will only darken your lips if they are used beyond their expiry date or if they are from disreputable companies.
8. Don’t pluck grey hair, three more will grow in its place.
This is false but it’s good habit not to pluck grey hair as it sometimes destroys the follicles and can lead to bald patches.
9. Every grain of rice left in your bowl is a year of bad luck.
Not wasting food is a good thing but believing the future depends on few small bits of starch is maybe a bad thing. Poor us, we thought it to be true.
10. If you keep making such weird faces, it’ll get stuck like that forever.
This is one of the classics and it’s entirely hilarious. Your face muscles are elastic and will always return to their original shape. Otherwise, Jim Carrey, Mr.Bean and many more would look permanently like this.
11. If you swallow your gum, it’ll stay in your stomach for seven years.
Fact: When gum is swallowed the stomach just pushes it right along…along with whatever other weird things your child swallows.
12. The seed myth.
She told me not to swallow apple seeds(as a matter of fact this myth applied to ANY fruit seed) because a tree would grow in my stomach. I actually believed her for a while.
13. Lights off!
I believed that it was illegal to have the lights on in a moving car.
14. Sundae trouble.
Back then, all of us loved frozen treats and we could eat them all day everyday so whenever I asked for a Sundae, my mom would just say, ” I could not get a sundae because they were only sold on Sundays.”
15. Don’t shave because it will make your skin dry and flaky.
It totally depends on the skin type! If you shave it right, then it won’t be a issue. Above all, it’ll make your skin look and feel smoother by exfoliating or removing the top layer of dead skin cells. our mama’s used to fool us quite well with these myths.
