The biggest gangsters and mafias have established their empire strong while carrying out illegal activities time and again back in the day. Gangsters might be the black hat but over the years, they’ve had made movies based on their lives and how they led their lives. They are so mysterious that they never cease to fascinate us with their mastermind plans. Having said that, some of them are still remembered and they have engraved their names in the history of world crime.
Here are some of the most scandalous gangsters who led a badass life:
1. Pablo Escobar
After becoming the reigning lord of Medellin Cartel, Escobar was minting as much as $420 million a week. His drug trade flourished so much that he was smuggling nearly 15 tonnes of cocaine everyday. So much so that he smuggled cocaine into the US by hiding it in airplane tires. To handle this huge amount of wealth that came his way uninterrupted, Pablo bought a Learjet for the sole purpose of flying his money.
His estate, Hacienda Napoles, encompassed about 7.7 square miles and included a go-kart track, private airport, and a zoo containing giraffes, lions, elephants and hippos.
He could have been even more rich, but he lost as much as 10% or $2 billion, every year to rats chewing up the bills stored in warehouses. He spent $2,500 a month on rubber bands to wrap his cash and became the 7th richest person in the world in 1989. One night, to keep his daughter warm while they hid in a cave, he burned $2 million cash.
In 1991, he surrendered to Colombian authorities under a deal that he be sent to a prison called “La Catedral”, which he helped design. The prison had a soccer field, bar, jacuzzi, waterfall, casino, spa as well as nightclub and he get to choose his guards as well. La Catedral became the hub of more drug deals and murders.
2. Dawood Ibrahim
In 2011, Forbes listed Dawood at #3 among the World’s Top 10 most dreaded criminals. Dawood Ibrahim has an estimated net worth of $6.7 billion as of May 2015 according to Forbes. He is the founder and CEO of D-Company and India’s most wanted man. Dawood is among the top 5 richest drug dealers of all time, second only to the likes of Pablo Escobar and Amado Carrillo Fuentes. He has nine residences in Pakistan, his Karachi’s posh Clifton enclave residence is spread over 36,000 sq. ft. and boasts of a pool, snooker room, private gym and tennis court. He has huge stakes in the ship breaking industry and uses his money for smuggling explosives and other contraband goods inside the country. He wears stitched suits from Saville Row, sports a Patek Phillipe wrist watch and drives top of the line Mercedes and sports cars.
3. Al Capone
Also known as Scarface, Al Capone when 26 expanded “the outfit”, as he referred to his underworld organization, and went on to become one of America’s leading mobsters. By some estimates, his crime syndicate pulled in around $100 million a year, the largest portion from bootlegging, followed by gambling, prostitution, racketeering and other illicit activities. Al was taking in about $105,000,000 a year in the 1920s, or about 1.4 billion in today’s dollars. He was known for sending flowers to rival gang member’s funeral; one funeral he spent over $5000 on flowers.
4. Haji Mastan
In 1956, along with Sukur Bakhiya, Haji Mastan started his smuggling business and earned great profits. White clothes, imported cigars, and white Mercedes-Benz became his signature. He is one of those gangsters who also has produced films and he has his bungalow right next to Ambani’s Antilia and is valued Rs.100 crore.
5. John Dillinger
He spent most of his years in prison, but once he escaped from prison using a ‘gun’ made out of a wooden block, he used that fake gun to keep guards at bay while he got his hands on a Tommy gun and stole the sheriff’s personal car. He robbed many police stations, and soon became a nationwide celebrity as his face splashed across newspapers and newsreels as much as some Hollywood celebrity.
He is one of those gangsters who became so famous and recognizable that he underwent plastic surgery worth $5,000 to try and change how he looked but he was unsatisfied with it saying,”Hell, I don’t look any different than I did!”. Thousands of people flocked to the scene to get a glimpse of his dead body. People were even dabbing handkerchiefs into his blood in the hopes of selling them as souvenirs.
Talk about a crazy life and they all led one hell of it. They had portrayed their lives well under the radar but they sure lived through pain, fear, depression, misery and what not. In a way they teach us that evil ends for a good cause and we shouldn’t mess with world, people and live peacefully.
