Nostalgia: Top 10 Doordarshan Serials Of All Time

Over the years Indian TV Industry has evolved a lot in the making of good to best serials, which envisage as the pioneer in the Hindi Television Industry. Back in that Era of 1980 and 1990, when there was no big development in the Telecom Industry of India, Doordarshan Serials were the only way of getting entertained by people. Whenever we talk about Doordarshan Serials, nostalgia comes back, again and again into our minds.  In early days of TV Industry, the programs were wholly realistic, based totally on the ground reality of Indian Civil Society. Shekhar Suman, Alok Nath, Shahrukh Khan are among few who got a lot of success later on. Saying that we are going to present, a list of, top 10 Doordarshan Serials of all time.

1. Hum Log

It’s an Indian Soap Opera, whose first episode came on Doordarshan channel in July 1984. The genre of the show is Drama-Entertainment. The story depicts a Middle-Class family and shows their everyday struggle and aspirations. Influenced by the Mexican show Ven Conmigo, Director P Kumar Vasudev got an idea to make this show in 1980. The main leads of the serial are, Vinod Nagpal, Jayshri Arora, Rajesh Puri, Divya Seth, and Sushma Seth. The drama got a vast popularity among audience way back then. Show idea came from Indian Broadcasting Minister in 1982, after his Mexico trip. The script is written by Manohar Shyam Joshi. Music Director Anil Biswas is, behind the title score of the Show. The show hits back the ediction, in the Indian society through different subjects. Total 156 episodes of the show were aired from 1984-1985. At the end of the show legendary actor, Ashok Kumar used to give his narration couplets and limericks. It’s also, one of the longest running shows at that time. Doordarshan serials like this are very rare these days, who depict the normal people.

2. Byomkesh Bakshi

It’s still considered the first detective series showcasing the Byomkesh Bakshi character. The script is from the Bengali Writer, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. This Doordarshan serial is, still fresh in the memories of Indians for its storyline and screenplay. The main leads of the show are, Rajit Kapur, K.K. Raina, and Sukanya Kulkarni. The story revolves around the Bengali Detective Byomkesh, who detects and solves the hot icing cases, with his excellent, intelligent work. Byomkesh character in the show considers himself as the guy who seeks the truth, different from the conventional detectives. Here Byomkesh makes the trap for the perpetrators to kill them on their own for their crimes. He believes in providing the justice to victims even if they are not able to provide any significant evidence. His one of the case Balak Jasoos is one of the episodes, where he gives punishment to offenders on his terms of verifying the criminals. The show actor Raji Kapur has acted in lots of Bollywood movies such as Baar Baar Dekho, Ki and Ka, Roy, and Begum Jaan. Few popular episodes are, Ret Ka Dalal, Makdi Ka Ras, Raaste Ka Kaanta, and much more.

3. Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi

This situational comedy show aired, way back in 1984 on Doordarshan. The writer of the show is Sharad Joshi, and director is Kundan Shah, Manjul Sinha, and Raman Kumar. It believes to be the first sitcom serial on Indian TV, which got an overwhelming response. The show tapes are still available in the London video store, owing to its popularity.  The main leads of the drama are, Shafi Inamdar, Farida Jalal, Swaroop Sampat, Rakesh Bedi, Tiku Talsania, and Satish Shah. This show revolves around Shafi Inamdar as Ranjit Verma and Swaroop Sampat as Renu, in the show. The storyline depicts the funny happenings in the life of Shafi Inamdar and Swaroop Sampat. The Divorce, Renu as a Salesman, The South Indian Marriage, Cancer, and Thief’s Sweet Tooth episodes are, among the most famous ones. Satish Shah also played the various roles in the show belonging to different regions and characters. Total 61 episodes of the show are aired including two seasons.

4. Buniyaad

Buniyaad is an Indian drama series aired way back in 1986, on Doordarshan. The show depicts the Indian partition in 1947 and its impacts. The drama director is Ramesh Sippy and Jyoti Sarup.  This show got so much response that; show again gets telecast on DD Metro and Sahara One. The show gave few renowned actors, Alok Nath and Kruthika Desai, who acted in many big Bollywood films. The main leads of the show are, Alok Nath, Anita Kanwar, Sudhir Pandey, Asha Sharma, Dalip Tahil, and Neena Gupta. The family portrayal is from Lahore, which then became part of Pakistan, and people were directed to either to be a part of India and Pakistan. The show depicts Dalip Tahil, who wants to move out from Lahore to India, with his family. Whether they reach India and the circumstances is that the show shows. How Family fights out the riots and internal quarrel during the partition, and how they overcome has beautifully shown in the Drama.

5. Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne

It’s one of the most popular Indian comedy show, aired on Doordarshan in 1990. The director of the show is Prakash Jha. The writer of the show is Manohar Shyam Joshi. The main leads of the drama are, Raghubir Yadav and Ruma Ghosh. The story revolves around Raghubir Yadav, who is a clerk. He gets frustrated due to the Bossgiri of his wife at home and from his boss in the Office. Due to this, he always dreams of taking revenge on them. He keeps on dreaming of becoming a billionaire and treating them with the same way. This Doordarshan serial is somewhat similar to James Thurber’s novel named as The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. There is a rumor of the show getting remake again and will air on the Sony TV.

6. Nukkad

Nukkad is prominent and notorious TV drama series, aired on Doordarshan in 1986-1987. The director of the show is Kundan Shah and Saeed Akhtar Mirza. The show script is by, Prabodh Joshi. The main leads of the drama are, Dilip Dhawan, Rama Vij, Pavan Malhotra, Sangeeta Naik, and some more. The show got an overwhelming response from the audience, for its storyline and screenplay. The show touches the soul of the viewers in few of the episodes for its heart touching stories and characterization. Few characters of the show such as Khopdi, Kadar Bhai got hugely popular that is also a part of few movie characters. The show mostly focuses, on lower income people, their troubles and struggles in the society and their day-to-day life.  This Doordarshan serial got so much admiration that producers of the drama aired the second season of the show as Naya Nukkad.

7. Fauji

Fauji is an Indian TV show, which depicts the training of Indian Army Commando Regiment. It was the first show of Superstar Shahrukh Khan. His role as Leftenant Abhimanyu Rai got a lot of Praise from the viewers and critics. The drama came on Doordarshan in the year 1987. The story depicts the life of Leftenant Colonel Sanjay Banerjee of Bombay Engineering Group from Indian Army. The show producer is the New Film Addicts Pvt Ltd. Also, the director is Colonel Raj Kapoor. The show got a lot of admiration and success, which eventually gave SRK a big step in his acting career. Post his shows Fauji, Circus and Wagle Ki Duniya, he got approached by Hema Malini for his first movie, Deewana in 1992, and the rest is history.

8. Malgudi Days

It’s an Indian TV show, aired way back in 1986, on Doordarshan. The drama depicts the town Malgudi, in South and fictional stories around there. The stories are basically from the writer, R.K. Narayan. The show title score is, by L. Vaidyanathan, and the director is Shankar Nag. The main leads are Anant Nag, Harish Patel, Dada, Girish Karnad, Shankar Nag, and much more. The episodes of the show are shot mostly in the Karnataka’s Shimoga District. There were total 54 episodes got telecast on the Doordarshan. Most of the episodes are one story long. Few memorable episodes of the show are Jug Spirit, Old Man of The Temple, and Missing Necklace. The show is also aired on Sony TV later, because of Public Demand.

9. Dekh Bhai Dekh

It’s another situational comedy show, aired on Doordarshan, from 1993-1994. Total 61 episodes of the show came on the TV. The show director is Anand Mahendroo, and the producer is Jaya Bachchan. The main leads of the show are, Shekhar Suman, Navin Nischol, Farida Jalal, Bhavana Balasar, and much more. The show is all about Diwan family and its ancestors. The drama depicts the family and its ongoing relationship among its members. Most of the episodes show the fight between the members, and the irking parents, also the money problem that arises. This show has given, Shekhar Suman as one of the most talented TV and Bollywood actor to Industry. These kinds of marvelous comedy shows are the gems of Doordarshan serials.

10. Tehkikaat

It’s an Indian TV Drama, based on the genre of detective, aired from 1994-1995. The drama provides a lot of thrillers to the audience through its characterization and script. The drama depicts the various crimes and how a team of detectives cracks the cases. The main leads of the show are, Vijay Anand, Saurabh Shukla, and few more. The director of the show is Karan Razdaan and Shekhar Kapoor. The show got an overwhelming response due to the innovative way of solving cases by Vijay Anand. People still admire the acting of Vijay Anand in the show. Vijay Anand plays the role named as Sam. The chemistry between Saurabh Shukla and Vijay Anand is still into the memories of people. These kinds of Doordarshan Serials are very rare these days.
