Do you folks have heard or are guilty of saying things like ‘Arts? Hmm…’, ‘It doesn’t have any scope. Think again’ or ‘Did you score a low percentage.’ It’s no secret about whom we are talking about here – the poor, tortured, misunderstood and interrogated art students or so called ‘artistic souls’. We could have won a Noble Prize or gone to the Jupiter, had a nice chat with aliens and came back but they would still be interrogated for this.
So here are 15 typical stereotypes that we art students are stereotyped with almost every day and we are really fed up of hearing them, to say the least:
1. What is the future in Arts?
Why do you do this to us? Please stop. Wait till we complete post-graduation and have big paycheck jobs at our footsteps and prove you wrong. *already started crying buckets of tears in a corner*
2. You want to become a teacher?
Arts means teaching – what is your logic even in this theory? Who started this stereotype first of all? You can write well so you will be an author too, maybe? Ohhh god!
3. You need not even study to pass
FYI! Arts is the only stream where all the subjects are theoretical. No, we do have practicals but for that too we have to write 100 pages of endless essays that are heaped on us. Its time to wake up and understand that every stream is difficult and challenging in itself. You need to study hard to pass – be it any stream. You do not take arts jus because you think you won’t have to study and if you did for that, this our only reaction to you.
4. You get to have so much fun
Yeah, right! What say you do not assume and jump on conclusions without first knowing the truth and the facts? Yeah, please do that!
5. You are in Arts. So you paint, draw, sing and just learn all that hobbies, right?
‘Can you draw? Draw me na, please?’ ‘Sorry but I am not good at drawing.’ ‘What? But you have taken arts so that should come naturally to you na?’ *slow claps for these people
6. “How much did you score in 10th?”
“85%, aunty.” “Toh beta arts kyu liya? Why did you take arts?” We could do anything but just roll our eyes inside our mind and instead, give our beloved aunties a sweet smile explaining why we decided to take it because we have a passion for it. “Yes but science beta – it’s the best. Sharma Ji’s son has taken science only.” Ugghhh! Sharma Ji’s son loves that or maybe just did it out of pressure. But we don’t love science and we have a life that you have no business in.
7. What will you do after taking Arts?
We can become a f*cking psychologist, therapist, sociologist, historian, librarian, humanist, economist, musician, artist and so much more – it is limitless – unlike your small brain. Even in psychology itself, there are more than 10 fields to select from. Do we need to say anymore? So do you mind now? No, so please get lost.
8. You are pursuing Psychology, but Psychology is also offered in Science, right?
Fun fact 1 – Psychology in science is for psychiatrists and Psychology in arts is for counselors, psychologists, therapists, etc.
Fun Fact 2 – Why don’t you just keep your unnecessary advises with you instead of looking like a fool.
9. Why? Didn’t you get admission in other streams or your preferred college?
Me: Why would I try in other streams?
Stupid Person: No, your first preference would be something else and not arts, right?
Me: No, my first choice was arts and arts only and I was happy to get into it.
Stupid Person: Ohhh… I thought…. (Yeah, why did you even try to think) But then too, Why arts when you could go for science?
Me: Why do you even open your mouth when you can shut up and do good to all of us.
10. You are so lucky. You needn’t worry about grades
Yeah what do you say about this – we also have a system called ATKT and we could be badly screwed if we ignored or didn’t worry about grades. Moreover with bad grades we are sure not to get any jobs then, as you say to us. Why would you even think such a thing? Don’t you have some brains. Oh well!, I forgot you don’t.
11. So, you would be that cool kid in the college – the hippie chilled one
All you people do is dress up, go to parties, get drunk and hangovers, do drugs, chill and hangout, don’t attend lectures and listen to cool music. Whaaat? It seems you are the one who is stoned right now – highly intoxicated. And also it seems you have more knowledge about all those things than me – who is supposed to do it every day. What do you have to say about that, haan?
12. You still have time to change and secure your future
‘Change your stream to secure your future and earn something.’ Why not you change your perspective about us instead?
13. You have all the free time in the world
Yes we are so free that we don’t have time to listen to you judgemental snob people. But we do have enough time to give you a piece of a mind and set you straight for even stating such a thing. We have to stay awake all night and all day to complete assignments on time and also study for the exams – just like you.
14. Arts is for dumb and crazy people. Are you one then?
Huh? Where did this even come for? NO! You are the dumbest people on earth to exist right now. We are crazy because that is how life should be lived. And most of the time most of us are quiet, mature and decent students with great talent and high intelligence. Do you get that straight?
15. A boy and Arts?! Have you gone crazy? Only girls study Arts
What do you even say to such old-school people who discriminnate between girls and boys. Yes, it as much a choice for the boys as us girls. We seriously have no words for you people so please just leave them alone and let them live their dreams.
What can we say – haters gonna hate. Art students, if you could relate to these stereotypes, then share it with your fellow classmates and argue together. Mention in the comment the most stupid comment you have heard yourself or are guilty of saying to a art student in the comment section. You can thank us later or you can do it by just liking our page and check-out more such fun stuff. Simple.
