Remember the times when we used to be glued in front of the TV after the school – eagerly watching the clock – waiting it to strike the time for our favorite cartoon to be aired. And how angry and glum we used to be when mother used to shut it off because it was past our allowed time. Aren’t those some days to reminisce about. And how excited we were about the holidays just for the sole reason that we could catch up the morning shows and also, we could play forever and whenever our heart wished.
As we are hit by a wave of nostalgia, we take you back in time with these 10 cartoon shows that we miss badly.
1. Dragon Tales
“Main chahoon main chahoon, dil sai main yeh chahoon, dragons kai sang udkar door desh chali/chala jau.” How many times have we wished wistfully to be in their place and to forget all the homework and just go and play with these dragons. This show was about two siblings, Emmy and Max, who found a dragon land – no no, they did not fight any dragons. These dragon were infact sweet little creatures with cute wings who go on exciting adventures with these siblings.
2. Popeye The Sailor Man
Popeye was a comic strip before it became one of the most loved cartoon shows of our time – Popeye The Sailor Man. How we used to get tricked in eating palak just because Popeye would get his strength from eating a whole can of spinach! I needn’t introduce him more – he is well known enough as the sailor man who roams around showing off his muscles, eating spinach, seeming to smoke a pipe – singing ‘I am Popeye the sailor man’ – and protecting his girlfriend Olive Oyl and himself from his arch-nemesis, Bluto or Brutus.
Zoinks! This cartoon was my personal favorite just because of the Dane, Scooby-Doo and his partner Shaggy and their goofy ways. We would be mystified by the ‘Mystery Van’ and its owners and how they would solve such terrific spooky and clever mysteries and crime scenes – only to realize as we grew older that it was just pure satire on our society’s believes about ghosts and their existence. It sure helped us brave the monsters under our bed and learn to not be afraid of anything. Though we envied the fact that the group of teenage friends got to have all the fun at such a young age while trying to crack these hilarious cases and personally, I still wish I could steal that sandwich sub from Shaggy.
4. Baby Looney Tunes
A twist to the classic Looney Tunes by Warner Bros. – we were enraptured by those cute little baby versions of Bugs and Tweety. The one thing we loved about this cartoon was that it taught us to be curious like Lola and at the same time, it also gave us kids life lessons and values while still being naughty and playing in the dirt. We bet you would turn a child instantly and watch with those big eyes and a sweet laugh if reruns of this show were played.
5. Phineas and Ferb
This cartoon proved that we kids have the brains of Einstein and can do even the impossible. The stepbrothers were bored as us in the summertime and what better thing to do than discover and create just near-to-impossible inventions. Just seems your usual summer fun, doesn’t it? And remember that annoying cousin or your older sibling who is always troubling you and complaining about you? – Well, that is what Phineas’ sister, Candace, is. Can it be anymore interesting? Yes, ’cause they have a platypus pet, Perry, who himself is a secret agent who is on a mission to sabotage the evil plans of a doctor. What more proof do you need that we kids are awesome.
6. Make Way for Noddy
Noddy and his Toyland was wild and creative imagination at its best. It inspired us to use imagination as our creative tool. He won our hearts with his kind and helpful nature but at the same time, energetic and childlike behaviour. And we all have wished once to own that cute cap of Noddy which nods with him as he speaks. Our childhood became memorable with Noddy’s pet Bumpy, his car, his plane and his crush, Tessie bear.
7. Bob The Builder
Bob the Builder was our Handy Mandy who thought positively of every situation in his job as a mason. We were fascinated more with his tools and how they would help Bob and work together to get a job done or fix things. ‘Can we fix it? Yes, we can!’
8. Richie Rich
We are nothing but jealous about this guy whose name was ‘Richard Richie Jr.’ and seemingly and coincidentally, his family was the richest in the town. He had a fucking robot as his maid and a chauffeur ready by his feet and apparently, has loads of dollar bills just lying in a safe in his house. He even had a dog named Dollar. As is to happen, the money is stolen and Richie Rich comes in as the savior and becomes the hero. But we still eagerly waited for each and each episode as to what will happen now. We can surely say we were enamored by his riches and this cartoon.
9. Timon And Pumbaa
Whoever says sidekicks are not important must have not watched this cartoon. The adventures of Timon and Pumba were just plain humor and always left us in a fit of laughter. And most important – it taught us the meaning of friendship – that no matter how different they both were, they still completed each other. They sticked together in good and bad times and that is what friends are for. Hakuna Matata!
The period of recess during our school has had different meaning for all us. We have had our fair share of memories during the recess time. Sadly, there were some kids among us who would be bullies. This cartoon was about the same – six kids of elementary school who decided to not conform to the given rules by society and be individual and especially, to stop the tyrannical King Bob and his minions from bullying everyone and spoiling their fun in recess time. This show was aired on Disney channels and though we all do not remember it as much but we have all watched it once in our life.
