What makes you happy? Music or Painting or Travel or Reading or Dancing? Whatever makes you happy, give your 200% into it. This is not us giving any motivational speech, but a person whom we interviewed certainly has proved it that “Love what you do and do what you love.” Meet the man who has changed the definition of dancing – Kartik Mohan, the owner and founder of Kartik Mohan Productions. Apparently, he is the man who has triumphed in choreographing and making the actor Neil Nitin Mukesh’s Sangeet one hell of a night for the actor and his family, as well. Of course, on a good note. We had an interaction with this phenomenal Dance Premier League fame and here’s what he has to say about what dancing means to him and his journey about the same:
Describe yourself in a humorous way.
Humorous!! Well, that is a tricky question. The one thing I think that is funny about me is I am a hardcore tea person. Wherever I go, to my clients’ place or even to any friend’s place, one thing that they know about me is I want tea at any hour of the day. There is always a large jug full of tea prepared for me at my clients’ place. Another funny thing is, I am pretty bad with memorizing the lyrics of a song. My clients often laugh on the lyrics I sing while teaching them.
What have you pursued professionally?
Well, I have done my MBA in marketing. Now, I am running my own company called Kartik Mohan Productions wherein we do a lot of events and wedding choreography. Basically we do everything from deciding the themes to production of that particular event.
How did you get into dancing?
Well, when I cleared my schooling I found out that my interest lies in dancing. So I joined Shiamak Davar’s Institute of Performing Arts, wherein I spent my 7 years in there. I also was an instructor out there. I just followed my passion.
Why only dancing as a choice? Do you belong from a dancing background?
Yes. My mom loves dancing and singing. So, I have basically inculcated her love for the same.
How did you managed to take the contract of choreographing Neil Nitin Mukesh’s wedding?
So, basically his sister is a friend of mine. We had worked together in a project. One very fine day she calls me up saying Niel is getting married. I was like, that’s great, congratulations. Then she said, he wants to see you tomorrow as he is looking for someone to manage his sangeet. I had a couple of meetings already scheduled, but he being a celebrity, I cancelled my other meetings. The next day I meet the family and they are so heart warming and welcoming. You won’t ever feel like you are at a celebrity’s place. After I showed them my work and presentations, they asked me to dance. I usually never dance in any of my client meets, but I did over there. I danced on the song ‘Kala Chashma’ and the moment I stopped, Niel said, “Done! You are going to manage my sangeet.” That was indeed a very special moment for me.
How supportive is your family about you choosing dancing as a career?
They have been extremely supportive. However, they’ve been a bit skeptical about my plans, initially but they always had faith in me.
How many dance styles do you know? Your favorite dance style?
I know a couple of dance styles. Tough for me to tell you the exact count. But my favorite dance style is contemporary.
Any dance style you wish to learn?
Oh, I’d love to learn Zouk. Its just like Bachata but its not much famous in India.
Ganpati dance or a sophisticated dance style, what would you prefer?
Honestly, both. I love dancing. I think you dance to express yourself. So how does it really matter what style is it!
You’ve been choreographing a lot of weddings and sangeets. Any plans to choreograph yours?
Not at all. There’s still a lot of time for me to get married.
Was it a smooth journey to reach at this level?
Not at all! Though my family was very supportive, I still did not achieve much in my first year. That was a phase where I was focusing more on getting some work rather than being paid. This journey has been so amazing that I have some permanent clients now like Colgate. It hasn’t been a smooth journey but it certainly is a journey full of experiences.
Which is your favorite song to dance on?
I love to dance on peppy numbers like Kala Chashma or Zinghat. I also love to dance on some slow contemporary music which requires a lot of focus and technique.
Who is your motivation or inspiration?
My brother, Prashant Mohan. The way he dances is phenomenal.
What do you think about people, especially males practicing classical dance style?
I think classical form of dances are so pure, unadulterated and a sight for the sore eyes. When it comes to males practicing any style, it is the lack of knowledge that makes us judge that individual. Any guy or girl can practice any sort of dance form he / she wishes to.
How has dance changed your life?
Dance has bought everything in my life which was missing. It has made me all the more disciplined and focused towards my work. All thanks to my parents ans Shiamak Davar, who believed in me immensely.
There’s a huge competitor in the market regarding the dance industry. What is your tip for budding entrepreneurs in this field?
Know exactly what do you have to offer and that should be really unique and creative from everyone else. Just be focused and do not quit.
Any message for the viewers of Tell Me Nothing?
Believe in yourself, because if you won’t, who else will? Follow your dreams and never ever give up.
